Pyramidal Plattenkalk summit with two glacial Kare. Includes leichte Kraxeleinheiten on the Nordgrat and the Jägerkamp as a bonus summit. Geitauer Alm cheese is a route highlight. (~14.5 km point-to-point)
On-foot traverse of the Herzogstand–Heimgarten massif, climbing from Walchensee to the Heimgarten summit and descending the Loisachtal side to Ohlstadt. The same ridge as the Herzogstand cable-car trip, walked the long way. (~14 km point-to-point)
Ride the Herzogstandbahn from Walchensee up to ~1600m, then walk the panoramic ridge to the Pavillon and gipfelkreuz. The classic Munich alpine day with most of the climbing skipped. Tegernsee-region summit with a year-round hut and great Alpenvorland views. Less crowded ascent route from Kreuth, more popular descent via Hirschberghaus to Scharling. Different mountain from the Tegernsee Neureuth trip (#27). (~12 km point-to-point)
Three lakes and a baroque monastery on a long Voralpen day. Mostly flat with rolling hills. Shorter 10 km variant possible if you skip the Reutberg leg. (~20 km (full route) or ~10 km (Hackensee + Kirchsee only))
Easy, flat riverside walk along the wild Isar — pick your own distance and turn around when you've had enough. (Choose 5 / 8 / 12 km)
Linear walk along the Isar from Icking down to Wolfratshausen, passing the small Ickinger reservoir lake. Flat, riverside, easy. (~10 km one-way (~3.5h walking))
Major Voralpen traverse over the Benediktenwand massif from the Isar valley to Benediktbeuern. Big day with cable-secured Steilstufe at the summit, ibex sightings likely, and a Klosterbräu finish. (~24.5 km point-to-point)
Quiet ridge traverse from the remote Jachenau village over a panoramic Bergwiesen-Gipfel and the Sonnenspitz, dropping spectacularly to the Kochelsee. (~13 km point-to-point)
Steep, no-cable-car climb to a popular Munich-area summit with a stunning view over Walchensee. Short on distance, big on effort. (~9 km round trip)
Take the Kampenwandbahn from Aschau to ~1467m, then walk the almost-level Panoramaweg to the Steinlingalm. Big alpine panorama, minimal effort. (~2 km from Bergstation to Steinlingalm (one-way))
Two lesser-known summits (Rötelstein, optionally Großer Illing) overshadowed by the Herzogstand-Heimgarten ridge. Mostly forested — at its best in autumn with the golden October colors. (~17 km point-to-point)
A Tirol summit reachable directly by RB60 — Bichlbach is just past Garmisch, and the trail starts right behind the station. Quiet (you'll see Bergdohlen more than people) with a Plansee/Zugspitze/Lechtaler/Allgäu panorama from the top. (~12 km out-and-back)
Long alpine ridge traverse over three summits — Feigenkopf, Klammspitz, Grubenkopf — with cable-secured sections on the Klammspitzgrat. Major day with serious panorama into the Lechtal and Allgäu. (~20 km point-to-point)
Short loop from a small S7 station up to one of the higher points around Munich (690m), past a popular small lake. Perfect short day or rest-day option. (~4–6 km loop)
A small ice-age gorge southwest of Starnberg, with a beech-shaded creek path and a lake at the end. Quiet alternative to the busier Starnberg lakeside. (~7 km one-way (Starnberg → Maisinger See), or ~12 km loop)
Werdenfels-Land panorama summit with two of the prettiest alpine lakes in Bavaria along the way. Lauter- and Ferchensee are the swim spots; Hoher Kranzberg is the surprisingly panoramic finish. (~15 km point-to-point)
Spectacular gorge walk through the Partnachklamm, then optional climb (or cable car) to Eckbauer for a Wetterstein/Zugspitze panorama. The gorge alone is worth the day. (~6–10 km depending on whether you climb to Eckbauer or just do the gorge)
Munich's southern forest right at the city edge — 13km² of woods, gravel paths, and wildlife, accessible on the S3 in 20 minutes from the centre. Pick your own distance. (Choose 4 / 6 / 10 km — multiple loop options)
Karwendel summit reached via the Bergsteigerbus to Rißtal. Mixed forest, alms, and alpine terrain, with a light cable-secured scramble for the last few meters to the summit. Tölzer Hütte for refuel. (~13 km point-to-point)
Lake-to-lake traverse on a quieter alternative to the busy Gindelalm/Neureuth route. Adds about 1 km but rewards you with the Baumgartenschneid summit and a sunset option from the Riederstein. (~13.5 km point-to-point)
BOB train into the Voralpen. Lakeside walk, then a steady climb to a forested castle ruin with a panoramic viewpoint over Schliersee, descending to a different station for the train home. (~6 km on foot (point-to-point))
Long-distance linear walk between two Munich S-Bahn endpoints, mostly through forest and along the Isar. The longest 'real' walk in this guide. (~22 km (~5–6h walking))
Stroll along Starnberger See's quieter west shore. Pick the distance, return by S-Bahn from a different station. (6 km (one-way Tutzing→Bernried) or shorter)
The classic flat lakeside walk along the eastern shore — villas, old trees, swim spots, alpine views on clear days. Good year-round. (~6 km one-way)
Eastern Mangfallgebirge summit on a striking rock spur. The Dr.-Julius-Mayr-Weg has 11 cable-secured sections with steps and stairs through a Felsspalt — alternative paths exist for those avoiding the exposure. (~13 km point-to-point)
Two-stage waterfall (95m total) in a wooded gorge. The short version is a 15-min stroll; the long version is a proper hike from Bayrischzell. (Short: ~1 km loop. Long: ~7 km from Bayrischzell with 300m climbing.)
Forested Voralpen ridge with a 30m-high observation tower at the top. Quiet despite being on the Tegernsee/Schliersee corridor — most people drive past without stopping. (~14 km point-to-point)
Classic Tegernsee day: gentle climb through forest to a Berggasthof with sweeping lake views. Well-graded, well-marked, sociable. (For a longer, quieter alternative ending at the same place, see the Baumgartenschneid variant from Schliersee.) (~8 km round trip)
Loop from the curiously isolated Kreuzstraße S-Bahn terminus down through a dry ice-age valley to the Mangfall river, past llama and camel pastures, with the option to extend along the river to the historic Maxlmühle gasthaus. (~12–15 km loop (depending on extensions))
Four-day hut traverse through the Tuxer Alpen — Rastkogelhütte, Weidener Hütte, Lizumer Hütte. Mostly unbooked huts, often empty Höhenwege, optional summit detours. Late summer. (~46 km across 4 days)
Forest-and-field walk between two of the Fünfseenland lakes. Quieter than Andechs/Herrsching despite being just next door. (~15 km (~4h walking))
Two-day traverse of the karstic Untersberg plateau between Berchtesgaden and Salzburg. Stöhrhaus overnight, two summits, and the spectacular Thomas-Eder-Steig descent past Germany's only developed ice cave. (~22 km across 2 days)
Push west all the way to Bavaria's third-largest lake. Mostly through quiet countryside. (~50 km one-way)
Quick hop NW to Dachau — an underrated old town on a hilltop with an Amper river path return. (~32 km loop)
Shortest option — a relaxed afternoon ride to a local lake and back. (~22 km loop)
Flat ride north through Allacher Forst and Schwarzhölzl to Bavaria's grandest baroque palace and back. (~30 km loop)
Direct east-then-north route to Schleißheim — two lakes and the Olympic rowing course. Open water and big sky instead of forest. (~26 km loop)
A bigger day — two of the Fünfseenland lakes in one ride, with a swim option in between. (~55 km one-way)
West-southwest through suburbs and forest to a beautiful lake. Ride out, train back. (~40 km one-way)
